New graphic design profile for the Danish Nurses Organisation

Kühl+co have supplied the basic paradigm for the new graphic design profile used by the Danish Nurses Organisation (DNO). The result shows great respect for the organisation's history, which dates back more than a century, while also looking forward and radiating a positive attitude towards the future. The new design style has been implemented in both printed and digital media.

"Our collaboration with Kühl+co has been exemplary. Pleasant and able staff from the company carried out an extremely demanding project with great professionalism and unswerving aesthetic sense," says Erik Harr, Communications Manager, DNO.

Flexible, user-friendly design template

One aspect of the design project was not up for change, namely DNO's existing well-known logo. Kühl+co were therefore faced with the challenge of creating a design style based on and alluding to the organisation's circular emblem with a four-leaf clover at its centre.

Over the year DNO issues a variety of publications to its members and the general public. This made it important to create a design template. A design template is a practical tool for ensuring that publications all receive the same visual expression despite differences in format and colour. Kühl+co devised a template for three levels of publication.

Level 1 is predominantly for internal DNO use and consists of a relatively simple template for black and white printing. It has a rigid framework and offers little creative freedom. Level 2 is intended for duo-tone and offers greater creative freedom and flexibility. Level 3 is full colour.

The design template embraces multipage publications, five formats, cover designs, two different poster sizes and three types of ads.

"We are very satisfied with the graphic design profile that Kühl+co have supplied to DNO. The template guidelines are actively utilised in our day to day work in the compilation of our many publications. This helps strengthen the credibility of the messages we communicate to our members and to external interested parties," says Erik Harr.

Solution examples

Kühl+co have elaborated a new design line and a new photo style for DNO and implemented them in a series of seven brochures.

For the DNO Congress in Odense in September 2002, Kühl+co were entrusted with design and production of the exhibition in the foyer entitled: 'DNO in Tomorrow's World'.

Kühl+co have also produced DNO's Nursing Calendar. These calendars are extensively used in everyday nursing, where the duty sheet has a central role. The key challenge consisted of designing a calendar that would appeal both to men and women.
